Oil pressure control system

SO i had a revelation that I thought I'd share.
I'm a bit of a data geek, and have a habit of pulling pertinent data from the computer while driving, with one of the most important being oil pressure
I have noticed that at hot idle my oil pressure is around 15psi with the oil pump control duty cycle hovering around 50%
I though that meant that the pump was being pushed up 50% from baseline to keep the bearing afloat at low engine speed, but i was wrong.

While going down the road, the oil pressure control is often changing in response to throttle position and boost, this is expected.
What was not expected was that, when you roll into the pedal, the oil pressure control duty cycle drops to zero and the oil pressure jumps..
So getting onto the loud pedal makes the duty cycle drop to zero, the oil pressure jumps to over 40PSI, up to well over 60psi hot @ higher revs.

This is encouraging in a way to me, but the purpose is obviously to minimize load on the oil pump belt, and fuel savings (reduced pumping loss) at the potential expense of engine longevity (imho)

I don't know if this has been discussed but I thought some might find it interesting.

Oil pump tech has been discussed a lot on the high performance group side of things, pretty interesting to see how it all works. These vehicles seem to love to run their oil pressure duty cycle at idle or cruising pretty high, but like you mentioned, once you step on it it does drop considerably. I’m guessing, but could be why these vehicles have oil starvation problems on hard launches.

I believe the oil starvation issue is due to the oil pan design on hard launches. Fen Fabrication has a new oil pan they are marketing to solve that issue.

That would make sense. Also filling up the oil to 6.5 quarts helps too and the Fenfab oil pan seems to help even more.

to that point, i bumped in an extra 3/4 of a quart and my engine sounds much happier.. so thats going to be the new norm for me
