I answered this in the other thread, so forgive me for the duplicate post. This is updating a very large map file. Mine took a couple of weeks to get the entire file. You can of course update the maps by way of thumb drive too. That's the quick way.

No need to apologize for the duplicate post! I wasn’t sure which place to post it since it’s kind of pretty relevant in both forums.

I may have to see how to do the thumb drive update. Because as of now the only time that update wants to start is when I’m at home on Wi-Fi and just sit in the car for 45 minutes while it’s running doesn’t really work. Ha. Then it acts like it’s done when the bar finishes, but then it comes back the next day and starts all over.

Mine did that some time ago. It is just downloading what you have already. It takes a number of days to finish. I turned off auto updates after that.

But every day that it starts the update, it starts back from zero as it appears on the screen, I’m not sure if that’s actually where it’s starting from because it doesn’t give you a percentage. And I will probably do the same thing and turn auto updates off. I use CarPlay anyway for navigation so the maps is kind of pointless.

I don't think this is the way it works.
Ya I feel like everyday that it pops up, it’s starting from zero. I need to find out how to do the USB update. Where do I go to get the file? 4U5T-14G421-CJG_ 1709610049000.TAR.GZ

yeah, then why is it trying to do an update?
They do. And in my opinion it it not worth it.
Yeah, then why is it trying to do an update if it’s actually something I need to pay for? I’m just gonna turn off auto updates and not worry about it. lol.

I've been where you are and wondered what the heck was wrong, then one day, (seriously like two weeks or slightly longer) it said download complete and it and all is well.

They give you one or two free updates. If you have it set on auto download, and they've sent the download, they probably view it as your freebies are used up. They charge a minimum fee to send you a thumb drive, even if it's the free one. Seems like it's $40.

You wont need to pay for this. The only time you pay is if you order the map update. I suggest going to the Ford Owners SYNC update page to see where your Explorer is at on updates. https://www.ford.com/support/sync-maps-updates/
If your free map updates are over Ford is crazy on the price to update. 109.00 to download or 149.00 to order it on a flash drive. My SYNC version is 23188 and the map is NA 2 22 I think my last map update was about 2 years ago. Once the free one was done I switched over to Google Maps using Android Auto,

OK, good to know, I’ll just leave the car and let it do its thing. Is it something the car needs to be running for? Or will it install over the air when I’m driving? I never see it do that only when I get home and connect to Wi-Fi.

See I didn’t think I need to pay for it because it’s trying to install something, but when I go to that website, it has me enter my vin and then it wants to charge me for updates. So I don’t understand what it’s installing if it’s wanting to charge me. My sync version is up-to-date and the map version is 2 23.

I honestly don't know it seemed like it would continue the download for 20 minutes or so once I shut the car down. Like you, mine was pulling it off of my home modem.

You can let it continue and it will not cost you. But I can almost guarantee Your SYNC and map versions will remain. This tells me you have run out of the free map updates.
