Never saw this before but I do get random error messages on my `21.
The other day it said the rear sensor was disabled.
A couple of weeks before that I got an error saying the side mirror indicators were disabled.
I also had an issue a few weeks ago where the navigation was literally going nuts. It was switching to all kinds of options on its own like it was possessed lol.

Sad to hear that after over 2 years of production, Ford engineers haven't resolved any of these random, intermittent electronic gremlins! It will be time for a mid-cycle refresh soon and the early model problems still continue!

I drove 5 hrs on SPORT mode through the mountains (mostly highway). Filled the gas tank. Turned it back to SPORT after starting up. That message showed up. Tried different drive modes, no change. Turned if off/on again after 10 mins. It went away. IDK:unsure:

Weird messages show up mentioning all kinds of things going offline (backup sensors, cameras, etc) but it's usually a few months apart. No idea why Ford never drove this vehicle before releasing it. Makes zero sense in a quality control aspect.

If you look at the "awd animation" in the various modes, you'll see it's engaging the FWD clutches more in Sport mode than in Normal or Tow modes. So there is a lot more engagement/disengagement of the clutches. That would definitely lead to more heat IMO. I doubt anyone drove around in the mountains for five hours in sport mode when Ford was testing things. It may in fact be ok to say Ford failed at that, but at least it employed the right diagnostics to let you know! It then also disabled the clutches to allow things to cool down so you could proceed instead of just shutting down the vehicle entirely. Seems fairly reasonable to me.

That's fair to not leave one on the side of the road. Your theory is sound.

Though it was all highway driving 'through' the mountains, it wasn't off-road by far. :) Mostly various inclines/declines.

I'm curious to know if anyone else has seen these error messages before (maybe on long trips?).

In sport mode, it locks up the FWD when accelerating and unlocks when decelerating- all of which makes perfect sense if you're on a racetrack. It also explains why heat would build up with the wet clutches in the transfer case during a long drive in hilly terrain (I didn't assume offroad). I wouldn't take a long drive in any condition just in sport mode simply because it also keeps the torque converter locked and delays upshifts so as to employ engine braking. On any long trip, this would be terrible for gas mileage, especially when going downhill. I'm not a Ford apologist by any means, but it certainly appears to me that despite your having some "gremlins", in this case, everything worked exactly as it's supposed to.

Thanks for the sound advice. I've mosrly driven this ST in sport mode. I bought the aftermarket exhaust to drive and hear it driven like a demon from hell. But you got me second guessing long trips in anything other than Normal/Eco modes.

You claim you are not a Ford apologist, but you are wise in the ways of the "Ford-ce". :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: Sorry, I couldn't help myself!

It traced to a speed sensor on the axle or something like that. The part was on back order and took awhile to come in.

Got this error today in a 2023 with 21". But, in an ice storm and about a 1/4" of ice coating the full thing and doing donuts for like 20 min. Went away after about a minute.

Hopefully it doesn't come back like mine did when I needed it most!

Mine keeps coming back every time that I get some kind of tire spin it disables the awd I have to turn the suv off for about a min then turn it back on and it will go away. I work in a remote area that I have to drive to loose gravel. Reason I went with the st for the awd.. sadly I regret getting it. It has a lot of issues from a blue screen to all sensors failing

While I was having launches on the drag strip several times I got that message... I parked the car I let it cool down and after I started it I got the message that the 4wd had been connected

Did the problem ever happen again?
