Well guys, this may do it for me. At about 20K miles my wife and I have noticed an exhaust smell inside the vehicle. Not willing to keep the ST with this issue. Taking it into the dealer to have it looked at next week along with the recall on the screen. I might see what they will give me for it and move on. Vroom and CarMax offering me what I paid for it a year ago. Has anyone had this issue or some thoughts on what the problem may be?

There has been a recall on my ST stating that the left cat could have a crack and allow exhaust gases into the cabin. Waiting for parts to have it corrected, but no issues with my ST.

Seems this Gen Explorer has had its share of growing pains. Wouldn't blame you if you sold it. Especially if you can recoup all of your money. Wish you the best. Shelby.

I had mine in last month for the recall on the back up camera. While it was there they diagnosed the leak and replaced the catalytic converter. I wasn't even aware of the problem.

Okay, just took my ST into very reputable dealer with a great Service Dept. Got the screen update and had them take a look at the exhaust smell issue. Service Advisor was at first telling me had never heard of this problem, likely really I say to myself. About an hour later he comes to me showing me there was just a recall that came out for my catalytic converter. They have ordered the parts and will call me when they come in. Also salesperson and I discussed the 2021 Platinum they have, but doubt I want to go there, although he did say there was no mark-up on the price.

What year is your ST and when was the recall issued? I have not seen a recall. I have noticed an exhaust smell after a cold start and while sitting at stop lights. Selecting recirculating air seems to help but need to have Ford look further into it.

Sucks to keep hearing this. Almost sounds like I need to budget for full exhaust before I even take delivery

That's what I did lol. Have DP's and Thermal exhaust on order. Wonder if my Explorer will show up before or after the exhaust.

Yup. Get the stock exhaust off before it turns to shit. Sell it for whatever you can get for it. Scrap yard if you have to.

I heard issues ranging from the cat converter cracking to faulty exhaust manifold gaskets. Curious to see if Ford would void my warranty if I put on an aftermarket. I would hate for them to come back and say "the reason your turbo crapped out is caused by the aftermarket exhaust."

Recall on the cat confirmed today and new part is back ordered until late Feb. Wonder if Ford will be liable for carbon monoxide poisoning....

They obviously aren't recalling these because owners' aftermarket exhausts are causing the problem.

I didn't have a problem with my 20 until the dealer disassembled the exhaust to check the left cat. Now I notice an exhaust smell and a "spatting" sound like an exhaust leak.

I think you need to read my statement again. My exhaust is factory, not aftermarket and the factory cat has a recall, which is being replaced. To your point, We are all born ignorant, but one must work hard to remain stupid - BF

Answering your original question depends entirely on the circumstances. I will say that if your local performance-oriented Ford dealer puts the aftermarket cats on- you're probably good. If you do it yourself or at an aftermarket shop, you'll be taking a chance. I'm not judging, but you do know it's a federal offense to modify working emission equipment without the correct supporting documentation, right? Luckily you don't normally see EPA officers trying to trap individuals, but if your local Ford dealer decides there's not enough recompense to deal with the side effects of your modifications or the warranty rep decides it's too much of a cost to Ford to repair under warranty because of your mods, you have a problem.

As I posted in other threads, if you modify your car, you assume some responsibility- pay to play. And for those who are going to scream about Magnuson-Moss et al, and their rights, when your dealership decides to not warranty the repair, unless it's egregious, are you really going to let your car sit idle while you hire a lawyer and start the proceedings? Just an FYI.

Well last week the ST broke down completely when my wife was driving it on the highway. I had to call Ford for a tow truck. Wife said it had no power, I told her to shut it off and restart, she said it still wasn't right. So the ST is at the dealer for that issue and I explained that another dealer ordered the cat converter under warranty due to exhaust smell. Dealer service advisor informed me they would look at this issue but they had to prove to Ford with pictures that something was wrong with my exhaust even though there is a recall. She wasn't sure how other dealer ordered parts without doing this process. Anyways, they took my exhaust apart and she said my left side converter was all 'cracked up'. So they have ordered the parts. For the loss of power I showed them a pic of the dash and the issues displayed in FordPass, but got that same old story, 'we can't duplicate that problem'.
