I've been wondering this too. They announced the order banks were opening, and early rumors were redesigned interior, but it's weird they announced order banks opening before announcing what people would be ordering.

2023 Explorer order banks open August 11th. Production will begin on November 7th.

Bigger question…,,,,,4 bolt or 3 bolt?!!!?
Or two bolt?!? If only 1/10 of a percent broke with 3 bolts, maybe they'll drop another one to save a few more bucks.:rolleyes:;)

With used values the way they are right now its not the worst idea in the world. Probably sell it for what you paid or more.

Also, the interior and infotainment is really the biggest knock against explorer. The laggy digital cluster, the poorly implemented vertical screen, the big panel gaps, explorer's competition doesn't have these issues. While st owners will look past these issues for the chassis and engine, if you're buying a limited or platinum or similar vs a palisade or pilot... Those are bigger deals to the average buyer.

I sincerely doubt it.

Besides, there's also no competition for the ST to make them want to upgrade.

For price/performance/ergonomics, the ST is literally in a class by itself. Nothing else even comes close.

ST is only a small percentage of Explorer sales. While Ford has a performance value prop in ST... The rest of the lineup (the boring part) is handily outclassed by other boring vehicles. It doesn't offer the same value prop vs other boring vehicles that ST offers vs performance offerings. A Limited or Platinum is equivalent in price or a little higher than its competition. And that's when things like the gaping panel gaps inside the poorly executed screens, the cost cutting in the interior really hurts. If you compare the interior of a Palisade to that of a Explorer, the Hyundai absolutely kills it, with a MUCH better warranty, and the trade off is a couple hundred pounds towing. Pathfinder out tows Explorer, is priced lower, and has a proven reliable NA v6 plus a nicer interior.

The refresh isn't to keep ST a performance bargain, it's to lift the other models out of the mid or bottom of the class.

if I'm buying new, I'll opt for a refresh in 2 months vs buying last gen

I don’t think any of those changes are going to happen. Not at least here in the US.
The 23 aviator is largely unchanged, which is just the luxury version of the explorer. So I suspect no changes. I suspect they’ll wait for 24 when they switch over to android Os.

In your opinion. The Aviator and optioned out X5 can be had for 3-4k more vs a fully loaded ST, they're also similar in performance just MUCH nicer interior. Of course not everyone wants a luxury car either. So all boils down to what a person wants.

The only X5 I would consider, and I did, is an M50i and you’re not getting into one of those for 3-4K more than an ST.

Hence opinion. The X5 40i gets better MPG, is faster on a straight line vs the ST and can also tow more. Smaller on the inside with the 3rd row but better fit and finish. So just whatever a person would prefer but wouldnt say the ST is a unique class, there are comparable SUV's

The X5 M50i is a whole different beast.

I paid $48,500 out the door for my 20 ST with pano, tech and street pack. Bang for the buck the ST couldn’t be beat.

Its not a knock against the ST and the great price you got it is not the norm nor was it back then either. Im going by standard prices. Someone here got an X5 fully loaded x40i for 64k~, MSRP was 70+. His ST was 60k. Normally X5's with some options are in the 63-64k area around me.

My 20 Explorer was also fully loaded at 61.5k~ MSRP, got it slight under 52k, not as great as priced as yours but also not the norm especially not in today's time.

My 2022 fully loaded with moonroof, street pack, tech and high package, 4WD, basically everything except the DVD players, stickered at $58,525

That'd be 60k now. Still a bang for the buck performance wise... But the other models are outclassed.


X5m is on my short list for next time if reliability costs don't terrify me endlessly. The X5 is a sharp looking car.


FWIW, Explorer is decently larger in practical terms than X5. Explorer slots neatly in size between X5 and X7.

Short story, yes.

Truth is, 99% of the issues I have with my 2020 are interior problems. The infotainment unit is a janky piece of garbage that’s mediocre when it works and doesn’t even work reliably (I’m on my third APIM).

Fit and finish are garbage compared to even my much cheaper Nissan Leaf (and Nissan interiors are noted for being garbage).

A refreshed interior would definitely pique my interest, but since it looks like the real refresh is 2024, I’ll continue to save my shekels and might consider switching to an Aviator in 2024 if used values don’t collapse.

I might even consider a different vehicle entirely, but living at altitude, I’m not quite ready to have two EVs and not much of else I can afford offers such sweet turbo performance with a close by dealership.
