How-to: Front climate control swap(add 20-21 temp display to 22+)

@randyknight is correct. The first character of the part number actually correlates to the MY of the vehicle produced. For example, with the F-150's an ML3Z vs and NL3Z vs a PL3Z prefix is a 21 (M) vs a 22 (N) vs a 23 (P). This character also happens to be the 10th character of the VIN. The 10th character of the VIN is also used to denote MY. (I am much more familiar with F-150's than Explorers, so I apologize that all of my analogies are with the F-150's)
So, in the case of the Explorer, the "L" at the start of the part number denotes a 2020 Explorer. and for a 2022 Explorer, the part number is likely to start with an "N", which is why it "doesn't fit your vehicle"

I am having a difficult time getting this part. Including Lakeland Ford parts. They want to keep sending me a different part number and I keep telling them I want part number LB5Z19980D.
The part number they want to send me cost upwards of $360. I can’t stand when Ford wants Vin numbers. It’s almost as if you’re not allowed to order anything outside of the year of your vehicle.

If you have heated and ventilated front seat with heated steering wheel this is the one you need.

Sooo...I just did the install and it was a tad bit of PITA.
First off I went to ebay to order the part LB5Z-19980-D. When i got the box in the mail the box had stickers with the accurate part number. when I opened the packaging the part came as LB5T-18C612-EG
I sent them a message telling them that they sent me the wrong part and was pretty dissapointed. The part did have the heated/cooled seat and heated steering wheel buttons so that was a plus and after getting a flashlight i could see there was a void and a possible display in there. When putting a light near my controller there was no void - it was solid plastic so that was encouraging. I decided to try the install just to see if it would work.
I do have to first say a big thanks to @randyknight for his video as it helped me get through the tear out but putting it back in was such a pain. having to get the top clips to go under the lip of the dash (circled in red), then into the bezel clips (circled in green) then making sure it came down correctly into the bottom plate, it was maddening. they have to be all inserted at the same time and I had to take it off and on several times.
Followed Randy's instructions for ForScan and had no issues with the install. the display comes right on when tested but you must reinstall the "As Built" data in order to get the buttons to actually work. So it looks like there might be several part numbers for the controller.

With the comments about what a PITA those top clips are, it may be easier to just pull the display and vents first and then go after those parts. Guess I’ll find out this weekend as I attempt to install the climate control that I ordered from Levittown Ford that is supposed to get here on Saturday. Given the comments about different part numbers showing up, I wonder which version I’ll get.

Don't get me started on wiring harnesses and part numbers...
Another thank you to @randyknight for his video. Replacement part arrived at noon and the install was up and running in less than an hour including the Forscan work. Didn’t pull the display and vents as the top clips actually came out easier than expected with a little coaxing. It was actually harder getting those clips back in and the bezel under the vent/dash lip. Trick seemed to be to tilt the assembly up from the bottom and one side at a time, get the bezel under the lip and engage the pin into its mount. Then you can deal with mating the bottom piece to the bezel.
