After playing around I found out it only centers the speedometer when the distance alerts and lane centering are both off. And of course the cruise has to be off. Otherwise it shows the distance meter in the middle. Had nothing to do with calm screen.
On the blinker arm, at the end, is a button. Press the button on the end of the blinker arm to change position of speedometer from left to center and back.
