Non street pack tire width

I am powder coating my 20" oem non street pack wheel in a couple of weeks, I also need new tires at the same time. The rim is 20x8.5 and comes stock with 255/55 I would like to put 265/50 tires on just to add a tiny bit of width.is this possible or is 255 the biggest you should go on a 8.5" rim? Appreciate it.

Look at the tire you are considering. It should have a spec on the rim sizes it fits. Not a big change though imo,

Just go to info on that tire and it will show what the minimum wheel width is. Make sure the circumference of the new tire is not smaller as it will look weird.

265/50 will fit fine, but is a little too short of a tire. The closest you can come in height would be to go to a 275/50, which is really the widest you should go on that wheel. This size should look nice on the ST with the 20" wheel.

Dumb question, but why would the 265/50 be to short but the 275/50 not be? Would it be the same height at a 50 sidewall? I was looking at TOYO proxes iii there site says 275/50 will fit a 8.5 inch rim so I guess I can get the 275s.

Although tire manufacturers don't follow this to a tee, the 50 and 55 are a percentage of the first number (tire width) that corresponds to the sidewall height. Many sites like tirerack provide the exact dimensions for comparison.

FYI on 2006+ F150's with the factory 20's they get a 20x8.5 wheel and the tire is a 275/55 from the factory so if ford can put a 275 tire on a 8.5 wheel, you can too.
