Had my 21 ST for a week now, 150mi on her. Is there a “break in period”? I really enjoy her in normal but got the itch to open her up in sport.... Should I wait until 500-1,000 miles on her to really open her up?

I've breezed through the owner's manual and didn't find anything regarding break in. The only thing that comes up is tires and that's like 400 miles and there's not much you can do to break those in besides drive.

Meh. I don't really break in cars and don't follow the varying rpm, throttle, etc. I give it a bit of thrashing on side streets and more subtle driving on the highway. Hardest miles were the first 10 during test drive. Damn, just realized that I don't even let it idle to let the turbos cool down anymore when parking after running it hard.

Today’s break in periods are really meant for the entire driveline; transmission, transfer case, differentials, tires and to a smaller degree the engine. Years ago there was more emphasis on seating the rings but that’s done before you ever get into your new car. Tolerances are so tight and accurate these days that old school break in periods are gone. What you want is speed variation to wear in mating services more uniformly and you want frequent heat cycles early on without getting too hot. Tires lack traction when new so part of the break in recommendation is a CYA for the manufacturers. So ya, get on it once in a while; won’t hurt a thing.
