Clunking when engaging gears

Wondering if anyone else has encountered this noise so far. I have started having a metallic clank sound when I first engage gears after startup. I rotate the dial to the gear I want, a second later it engages (I can feel it engage because the car tries to move but I am holding it back with the brakes) and then I hear a CLANK. Occasionally it does seem to occur when changing from drive to reverse/reverse to drive even after the car has warmed up and been driven for a bit, but any time I have heard it in those conditions it seems to be quieter.

Now, this does not happen every single time, but as you will hear in the linked video it can be quite loud. I also hear it sometimes after I’ve been driving for a bit and I go to engage reverse, and also every once in a while I notice it faintly at random times when I go to accelerate from a standstill. It is definitely at its loudest/worst when I have just started it up cold and put it into gear for the first time - my guess is because of the elevated idle speed at cold startup.

Tonight I listened to it a bit more, and while I initially thought it was coming from the transmission, I’m almost more inclined now to think it’s coming from the rear end, transfer case, or a joint in the driveshaft as I noticed the sound sounded more rear-biased than anything else. The sound reminds me of a sloppy u-joint but I haven’t been able to get under the car to have a look (fat guy problems).

Wondering if anyone else has encountered this and what, if anything, was the solution?

Definitely a click in there than mine doesn't have. something I'd get checked out while under warranty. Lets hope for a u-joint or something minor.

Put it in reverse. Gain speed. Put it in neutral. Lightly press the brake so you can put it in drive while coasting backwards and everything should snap back into place. At least that’s what I did.

No, no- you've got it all wrong. Put it in Drive, turn off traction control. Drive forward slowly. Slam on brakes. Put in reverse, and back into tree. That should put everything back correctly. :oops:

What did you find out?
Tech thinks it’s the D/R halfshaft, but the part is backordered out of the US for a week. So don’t know for certain yet, but they had another Exploder in the bays and found it was doing the same thing.

I’m actually experiencing this now and I’m taking my car in on Friday I’m at 21k miles no tune on my car whatsoever. The other day as I was trying to over take it like hung in gear like a floating sensation while the revs increased and then dropped and banged into gear and took off

Exactly! And the dealer saying since they can’t replicate it and it throwing no codes they can’t properly diagnose

Any update? Mine has been doing this for like a year now, never gotten worse, but also never stopped.

Yeah they threw in a new halfshaft last year. Problem seemed to be corrected, although I thought I heard it the other night again. Someone did a YT video on the problem I think…I think they said it was the axle splines slipping in the hub or something like that.
