Real world mpg

Two sets of data for the community - the on-board computer is never accurate. Below charts are all Costco 93 octane unless otherwise noted. These datasets are from calculated mpg:
Bands of +/- 2 std. dev. around curve fit line.
Last gas price / gal. swing down on the 2020 chart is due to switching the 2020 to E25.

If I get 18 mpg - 20 mpg I am happy. I drive a mix of highway and street driving, picking up kids at school, driving to work, average 30-40 miles a day. I don't know how anyone is getting above 22 mpg in these unless its all highway driving, or driving around like a snail which I refuse to do.

It might be optimistic- hard to tell. On a 2.5k road trip I checked the gas mileage over the entire trip on the highway. My measurements came in at 24.9 mpg. Computer showed 25.6. So in my case, not 10%, but a bit optimistic. Now bear in mind, my measurements are limited to the number of refills and subject to various gas stations, pumps, fuel temperature, vapor pressure, etc. Theoretically, the computer should be pretty much dead on if it's tracking all the right variables of injector pulse-width, fuel pressure and temperature, and distance. But once again, changes in those items could alter it.

I have a truck (different make) and hand calculated mileage and vehicle reported mileage always comes back within 0.2 mpg. I’ve checked it multiple times over 90k miles (track all our vehicles on fuelly)
Granted I’ve only did the comparison between vehicle reported and hand calculated 3 times on the explorer (it’s only got 4K miles) - but each time it has been off (optimistic) by over 2.0 gallons.
Given that both tests have yielded such consistent results, in my opinion, it’s reasonable to assume the
accurate. Like you said, calculating fuel economy isn’t rocket science.
