Oil and Filter Cartridge Change

Has anyone done their own oil change yet? Any tips on the new style oil filter/cartridge remove and replace process? Tools needed? How difficult to access filter?

I'm getting my first oil change on the house from my dealer but have been looking online for tutorials. I believe the process is similar to the 2.7L Ecoboost. Looks like it's going to be a pain with the oil after you remove the drain plug.

1 1/16 or 27mm socket for the filter, 24 ft lbs torque.
Oil filter FL-2062
Air filter FA-1947
6 qt - SAE 5W-20 - Synthetic Blend Motor Oil / For Cold start improvements Engine Oil - SAE 0W-20 - Synthetic Blend Motor Oil

Reset the oil indicator
Settings > Vehicle > Oil Life > Hold OK to Reset

Pretty easy to do the oil change today. Oil filter access easy from the engine bay. Only 1871 miles and very dirty as others have mentioned. I wanted to get good full synthetic oil in before winter. Thanks everyone for your help and comments. 472400249.png

That’s a great spot for the oil filter. Does it use a 27mm socket?

I used the 1-1/16" socket, worked fine. Used the K&N filter and I did change the O Rings and the OEM ones had black on them, maybe paint?

How much oil did it take? Where did you get the Oring?

5.2 qts 5w-30 Full Syn. O rings came with K&N filter cartridge.

Changed mine today Wasn't the easiest. Some of it my fault. Some Fords. Took off the front cover underneath. Didnt need to do that. If you take out the last row of fastners on the front cover you can get the back cover off. Might as well order some more plastic clips. They wont last long. Found 3 different types of push in style clips. Not all the same size, Some round, Some rectangle. Drain plug makes me a little nervous. Its plastic. Transmisson funnel works well for putting in oil. As both filter and fill spout are both right under the cross support. All in all not terrible but taking that cover off every time isnt going to be fun.

I agree with all of that. I found the same things on mine when I changed the oil last week. Couldn't believe it has a plastic drain plug. I had to search YouTube just to find out if that was really the drain plug.

Was told the oil pan was a composite also. That's the reason the plug is plastic. Read it on the internet so it has to be true. Haha

Also found out that the o-rings look like this when they've been used. Not sure what the pink stuff is that is coming off but the new Motorcraft filter had the same o-rings included.

I did my first oil change the conventional way but will be using the fluid extractor for my next oil change. If it works, I will definitely be doing it that way for most of my oil changes.

Just finished my first oil change and it was probably the easiest one I’ve done so far. Very clean and everything is accessible. The hardest part is dumping the oil into the container to dispose of.

Also, I’ve been reading about the pros and cons of oil extraction. There are a lot of pros but one con that I’m concerned about is the small amount of o remaining in the pan. I guess if you change your oil often, that’s not a big deal.

A couple questions:

1. Can we use the extraction process on our explorers?
2. Since the filter is on top, can we go through that point or do we have to go through the dipstick?
3. Lastly, what type of extractors does everyone recommend? 24V, manual, or pneumatic!
