Hello. I recently traded in the wife's BMW X5 on a 2020 Platinum. I was looking hard at the ST's but was having difficulty finding one with the options I wanted in my price range around here. Wasn't going to be my driver anyway so we settled on the platinum as it is essentially the same thing.

My daily driver is a 2013 Focus ST and I have a supercharged 2001 Mustang GT that I have built so adding another Ford fit.

I do work for one of the tuning companies so I will tune this myself but looking forward to reading more here. Already checking the for sale ads for parts lol.

It's possible this has been discussed at length somewhere on this forum, but I'll ask anyways:

What are the differences in the Platinum engine and ST engine that accounts for the difference in power made? Surely it isn't strictly tuning, is it? I'm only asking here because based on your job description, you would likely know more than most

The 2001 is my 3rd mustang. The Focus ST is my 3rd Focus. My wife previously had an Edge as well. I think I have a Ford problem lol.

I haven't gotten into it too much but so far it does appear to be mostly calibration related. I have started looking over the ST vs platinum calibrations and there are some subtle changes that would change the power output. The transmission is set up slightly different as well but again, all tuning related. I do believe the gearing is different between the platinum and ST though and that will change the feel.

It's all good, I have owned about 30 cars in 17 years of driving and well over half of those were Fords. 4 fusions, 2 edge sports, 2 explorers, 4 F-150's, 6 mustangs, a contour and an escort. I think that's all of them lol

Calibration is the only thing different between the engines. All other parts are shared. Final drive ratio is different. You should check out @PlatinumST build thread- if you're considering a lot of mods, you might want to see some of his conclusions.

It actually is just the tune. 2022+ Platinums/KR's come with the same power as the ST's.

Even then for 20/21 Platinum, far as I know nobody has actually dyno'd a Platinum. So not sure how much power is it really down by, if any.

I may try to get mine on our dyno but no real rush to do so.

That's surprising that Ford did that. It generally seems they won't pull power on a tune like that without mechanical changes as well (I'm thinking the 3.5 EB vs the 3.5 H.O., or the differences in the 5.0 between the mustang and the F-150). Good to know, thanks
