Intermittent wipers

When I move the wiper lever up one notch to activate the intermittent wipers, and turn the rotary dial, nothing happens to change the frequency of wipes. I recently had a new windshield installed.
Does the windshield have to be an OEM windshield? I don't know what kind the dealer installed, but the wipers don't seem to change speed no matter what setting I use on the rotary dial.
What am I doing wrong? What does rain sensing mean? The wipers do not start up on their own when it rains on my vehicle. I have to flick the lever to get the wipers to clear the window. On my 2014 Explorer, rotating the dial changed the speed of wipes easily. Thanks for your reply.

I leave mine in the one up position. They come on when it rains and go faster when it rains hard. Never played with the intermittent part.

Same here. Rain sensing works good for me the majority of the time. On occasion I will just turn the wipers on. I would think a proper windshield would need to be used to have the sensing part work correctly.
