Tried it again today and still a no go. Spent an hour with a Ford chat agent again today and still no resolution. they have opened up a case to look into to it, 5-7 day follow-up they say. Not holding my breath but will let y'all know what they come up with.

They told me to do the "check for software update" in the car and wait for 24 hrs and check back on the website. This is supposed to update Ford's database. Will try again tomorrow.

Chatting with Ford and it looks like their system shows that we have a 2010 model.

Yep, that is the website I went to that stated "invalid model year".

True story. My wife actually said one night as we were driving on the freeway in Houston, "look at the moon". It was a faded Burger King sign. We still laugh about that today.
