I’ve had my 2021 Explorer ST for about 3 months. Twice, while driving on the highway (80-90mph), I’ve heard a loud bang from the back right rear. Once I was in regular mode, once in sport mode. The first time I thought something hit my back side panel, a dull thud like a baseball at full speed. I couldn’t find any damage so I didn’t think about it again. It happened again today when I was the passenger, so I know for sure nothing hit the car. You can feel it through the whole car. There are no alerts on the vehicle when it happens. The only thing I can think is some sort of backfire. Anyone else had this happen?

You probably ran over something in the road and a tire kicked it up and made a noise.

I thought that the first time too, but the second time I was a passenger and immediate looked behind us and there was nothing in the road.

Sounds like typical "Squonk" behavior. You probably ran over one.

At that speed it might be difficult at best to see an object, especially depending on which way it gets flung. Just saying. I wasn’t there, so I can’t be sure obviously. If there was a serious misfire of any kind, enough to cause you to feel it in the whole car, I would expect you would notice some dip in engine performance, even if only brief.

Could be worth checking underneath for anything not firmly attached that might knock around at certain speeds.

Whatever it happens to be, good luck in your search!
