4WD Fault Service Required

I had the vehicle in park after driving about 15 miles in a parking lot when a "4WD Fault Service Required" notification popped up on my dash. Took a picture, clicked okay, turned the vehicle off and back on again. Drove another 15 miles back home and never noticed anything nor saw the notification again. Has anyone experienced this before?

I have seen it get confused when slipping on snowy roads or losing traction around a icy corner. I did the same thing...turned the car off and then on restart all was good again.

I'm going to keep an eye on it over the next several days to see if it happens again. I was literally parked for a few minutes when it went off. Just one more potential issue along with a laundry list of other I've experienced.
- Cats replaced
- Flex pipes being replaced (back ordered)
- Intermittent rough idle when AC is on
- Possessed liftgate
- Early crash detection warning with no hazards present
- Rough transmission shifts in sport mode (especially from 1-2 and 2-3)

Ouch and I thought I had it bad. Too bad I bought used and lemon laws do not apply.

Still love mine warts and all! My repairs were fixed right the first time and wasn't in the shop more than 10 days each time. So lemon law didn't apply.

Same here the pros definitely outweigh the cons. I knew what I was potentially getting myself into purchasing a the first year of a model redesign. What did they do to fix your liftgate, transmission and rough idle issue?

Had the same issue with our 2020, dealership narrowed it down to one of the speed sensors getting fouled. Believe it was in the front diff. Ended up selling the ST back to the dealership we bought it from and ended up actually taking a profit from it. Had too many issues and was a headache to deal with, placed an order for a 2022 X3MC should be delivered next month.

I got the same fault about a week ago and the vehicle was stuck in 4WD. I checked it with Forscan and got a code stating the "Actuator Stuck". I literally just got off the phone with the service rep who told me it's not covered under the powertrain warranty and neither does my extended warranty cover it! I'm calling Ford to bitch about it. The only reason I bought the ESP was because they said it covered anything electrical.

Have you checked your ESP to see if it states that electrical is covered? Might be worth taking a look.

Yes and the AWD module is one part that’s listed as not covered. It’s probably because so many people have had them fail! Some say it’s the Half-Shaft Speed Sensor that causes it. I’m hoping that once the sensor is fixed (which is covered) it will work properly.

My service advisor said that replacing the half-shaft sensor is the least invasive way to fix this. So far after 3 months and 3,000 miles, it's still fixed.

Well I’ll keep my fingers crossed. You would think that because there’s so many issues with this, they would know what causes it! The guy I spoke with said he’s never seen this issue in the year he’s worked there. I should bring my laptop in and show him some of these threads!

Take it to Sheehy Ford. They fixed mine 3 months ago! No hassle under powertrain warranty!

Sheehy is a good ways away from me nowadays. I used to live in Arlington not long ago, but now I’m in Tidewater. Keep your fingers crossed for me - picking up a new battery this afternoon

If it’s the half shaft speed sensor…and it likely is…it’s a $20 part and takes about 30 minutes to swap. No way I’d wait on a dealer for weeks and worry about warranty coverage for something like that.

I just got off the phone with the service rep and told him not to touch the vehicle. I’ll pay the $176 diagnostic fee but I’m going to do the speed sensor myself! If it fixes the AWD module issue then I’ll be good. I looked it up and it looks like it’s more trouble pulling the plastic shields off than replacing the sensor.
