4WD Fault Service Required

I just got off the phone with the service manager. I explained everything I’ve been told here about the sensor and he said he would look into. I guess they had already started the work on the sensor when I last talked to them so he wanted to know if they could finish the job. I told him to go a head and finish it but not to do anything with the AWD module until he looked into the TSB. They are going to clear everything out once they get it finished and see if the 4WD fault returns.

thanks for the update. So that speed sensor should be covered for you under warranty, right? Glad you’re getting that done so quickly! Report back!

It’s covered under my ESP but I’m going to show them the TSB and ask them why they told me the speed sensor was not covered by Ford. Maybe my ST was built before February 1, 2020.

I was lucky my dealer changed the sensor free of charge in less than 2 days at 42K miles.

Talked to the service rep and flipped out on him. They have had me ST since Wednesday morning and haven't done any work to it. I told him I wanted to pick it up and would bring it back when the AWD module came in. He tells me he would have the tech fix those isues and call me when it's done. That's when I lost it. I told asked him, "You've had it for two day and they haven't touched it? WTF! He said they were waiting for the module to fix everything at once. He tried telling me that the sensor is in the front differential and it has to be lowered so they can reach the sensor. BS! I told him I had the TSB which shows the time it takes to replace the speed sensor to be 0.8 Hrs. I also looked it up and saw how to do the job and it doesn't say anything about having to lower the differential! Why does it alway have to be a fing battle? Just fix the vehicle! I've got to find another place to fix my ST. Empire Ford just sucks!

Yeah, dealerships like to feed people BS and hope you buy it. I've done the speed sensor. It would be a 15 minute job except that front differential oil leaks out the moment you remove it so you need to top that off. 0.8 hrs or 1 hr is about right. Like others said, I'd replace that and the faulty wire and see what that does for you. The codes may be slightly different though than the AWD module but the alarms on the dash are almost identical. Also, with the speed sensor malfunctioning, it won't be stuck in AWD. Only certain features like intelligent cruise will be out. It will certainly be driveable. Probably more likely yours has something more to it than speed sensor. I just hope that they know what they're doing. I guessing that even with the fixes they are planning, there's still a chance it could be something else like transfer case, front diff or hub actuator.

Unfortunately a new battery did not magically fix the issue for me. The dealership doesn't have a slot until Thursday, so the ST sits. Pissed
My dealer said the warning and faults don't harm the vehicle and you can still drive it. Luckily though mine was fixed withing a couple days.

The bastards screwed me! I had them do the work and picked up the vehicle. As soon as I got home I went out with the laptop and now I can't even communicate with the module! Doesn't show codes or anything. I called them and spoke with the service manager. He asked me if I told them to disconnect the AWD module. I never asked the for that! My exact request was, "Do you think they can at least get it out of four wheel drive". Going back first thing in the morning. All I wanted was to see if by replacing the Speed Sensor it would clear the 4WD fault. I also found out from the paper work that the "broken wire" was just a pin that had slipped out of the connector.

Like I said, one of the faults says the “Actuator is Stuck”. Could be the actuator motor died. There must be a way to manually engage and disengage the actuator through the computer!

Tried Googling it as well as at the Fordparts.com site and nothing is coming up. The only thing close that comes up in Google is the Transfer Case Module. Nothing comes up at the Ford parts site.

This part, L1MZ 7P238 A, doesn't have a lot of description when you search the part sites. Your best bet may be to contact the parts department of one of the Ford parts suppliers. I know Levittown Ford has always helped me out.

edit: just realized this is the same part WaferTech posted. A lot cheaper at an online Ford parts dealer.

I think I’m not understanding something correctly. What’s the issue with it being in 4WD? They’re always in 4WD…it just divides the percentage to each axle as needed.

I didn't know that. Let me try to explain. This is what I am experiencing (other than all the faults that pop up); whenever I turn to either the left or right I can feel the front outside wheel trying to spin or the inside wheel dragging. It feel the same way my truck feels when it's in 4WD and I turn left or right on dry pavement. When I first checked the DTC's with Forscan, one of the desciptions in the AWD Module stated "Actuator stuck". Unfortunately I forgot to save the information. Even the tech said he could feel it and said it was stuck in 4WD. Do you understand what I'm trying to say?

Your front axle disconnect Actuator is stuck, I thought it was the other one.
