The SAE standard that Ford is using rates HP using 93 octane gas. Having recently crossed the US from Niagara to Phoenix to Vancouver in a Porsche that really does like 93, I found it not readily available in large parts of the US. Some states not at all and its not available where I live unless I get on a ferry and go to Vancouver. How do they get away with advertising HP when its likely that most of the vehicles they sell can never achieve their claims? I call that a scam, false and misleading etc. Fraud.

91 is available everywhere, that should be the standard.

i went on the SAE site but the document/standard cost 85.00 so unless someone has one kicking around, the new standard shall remain unknown.

Having said all that, gas is now 1.54/litre here so this pos is only going to get a diet of 87 as the cost of 94 (Chevron only, in Canada) will be about 2.00/litre. That's outrageous in US gallons. Not happening. So my car is down to, what, 350 hp? That's a WAG.

You’re not gonna notice the single digit difference in power between 91 and 93. It’ll be fine.

Maybe I'm in a bad mood, and perhaps I'll get flamed for this, but you spent 60k CAD on a high performance SUV with a twin turbo 3 litre that is rated 400 hp on 93 and gets maybe 25 mpg on it's best day. And now it's a POS and Ford is committing a fraud because you can't afford or find a better grade of gas? I'd like to be positive, but blaming Ford because you didn't do the proper research seems a bit off.

Let’s clarify a few things.

J1349 - SAE Standard.

Ford, Chevy, and MANY others DO NOT use 93 to rate power anymore. The new standard that most use now, is actually not gas. It is a standard fuel, produced in a very specific way, and they use it both for when doing power ratings and Fuel mileage. I could breakdown the chemistry of it, but that would be pointless here, cause most just don’t care.

The important part is that it’s Octane rating is 92 for vehicles recommended to run on Premium fuel like the ST. Not required, but recommended for best performance.

So technically 93(E10) could actually make more power than rated. That being said, it would be like Unbroken said, not be felt.

Also, the other thing to clarify, 94(E0) will make less power in our motors, even stock than 91(E10). Several Canadian VW tuners proved this a few years ago tuning and measuring results on a Dyno. Stick with 91(E10) and you will be just fine!

Nope. Spot on 100% the opposite of misleading. It clarifies the power was certified using Premium Fuel based on the J1349 SAE standard which happens to be 92 Octane. No funny business better fuel from some manufacturer. An actual standard. No Apple to Oranges like it used to be.

This Standard levels the playing field. That is why it was created.

There should have been an asterisk next to the 400hp number too.

HaHa.

Nope, in A lot of the US premium is 91. Even on the East Coast where most Premium is 93, all the WaWa’s are 92.

Premium just means the highest Octane/Best that station has, it does not mean 93.

Also the thing to note is no Turbo engine (well most) will get is full HP from 87 octane....So this just does not apply to Ford. There has been nothing misleading about the claims of HP. This has been well known since ford started producing Ecoboost engines. It was one of the battles I always used to have with my buddies that had Trucks....At the time up until recently I had a Toyota Tundra and my buddies had F150s...basicallly would say there trucks would get 15-17 MPG on a TT V6 that had the equivalent power of my 5.7L V8 and in the City and mine was only getting 13 MPG. So they would always tell me to trade in I would save money on gas. They could never understand that is was a wash for the TT V6 to get its full power and MPG it needed Premium which in my area runs .70-.90 cents more the regular which is all my Tundra needed. I traded my Tundra for the Explorer ST......While I miss the sound of the V8, I do certainly enjoy the ST. Also could not pass up the trade on my Tundra...I got 1k over what I paid new for it on trade and got about 6500 off MSRP (with Dealer discount\rebate) of the ST a month ago.
