Bad day for the ST

I was hit hard by a driver going the wrong way on a 2 lane road. The ST ended up hitting a curb at a 90 degree angle at about 40 mph. Cosmetic damage didn’t look too bad at first but suspension, wheels/tires and body damage resulted in a total loss. Fortunately no injuries. I’d like to thank you guys for the hours of entertainment learning about the ST. One of the best cars I’ve ever owned - just wish it could have lasted longer than the 10 months I had it. Wishing all of you guys many miles of safe and exciting driving.

Glad you’re okay that definitely looks like the car took a beating! Sorry you couldn’t stay longer!

Car did it's job, by dispersing the impact forces. Cars are replaceable

That's why I am on my third Explorer. They're some tough cars. Sorry yours was totaled. But thankfully it kept you safe, did it's job. Hopefully you'll find another one to replace it.

Thank you for the kind words. Agreed, the most important thing is that nobody got hurt. I’ll always remember the ST as a great car as I put 28K miles on it in the 10 months I had it. It was my 3rd explorer. Still looking for a replacement and just found an almost flawless (needs new tires) used 21 ST with 35K miles for $39K. Would be interested in your thoughts on the price/value.

Seems like a decent deal, I’d ask for new tires and if you could talk them down to like $37k then it’d be a good deal. Is it a CPO car?

Thank you for the response. Not CPO. There’s also a 2023 Platinum with 19k miles for $42K (which I could probably get for $40k. Seems like a better value with balance of factory warranty.

As much as I always say “ST over Platinum always” that difference in mileage and price is worth it to get the Platinum. Unless your in a rush though, I’d wait for the right ST to pop up, Platinums are nice but STs are just different, hard to put in words.

I would agree, decent deal. Would defintely try to negotiate new tires for the ST. If the Platinum has AWD, it's a great value, though. Not sure how you feel about performance vs. comfort. At 60, I would probably go for the Platinum.

If I may, however, have you thought about new? I was in the market a few months ago and found a relatively low mileage Platinum, was going to buy that, but, talked to the dealer. They worked it out to get the monthly payments the same for a brand new '23 ST. Just a lot more of them. It was the same dealership. You could get a '23 (if any are left) or a '24 with Ford financing of 0% to get them off the lot. The new car (if ST) also scores you a trip to the ST SUV Experience. I don't know your situation, but it's certainly worth investigating, especially with what I assume is a hefty down payment from the insurance company. Of course, if the insurance was enough to buy the used ones with no monthly payments, then the used is definitely the way to go.

So getting a ford extended warranty through zeigler or Granger etc is going to be a very good price
My dealer has matched zeiglers quotes on my last 3 vehicles. Just to not loose a small sale
Only thing I find not perfect on the st
Is ride is harsh on surface streets, where as my 22 f150 is much less harsh
But that's it. Both trim levels are great
Awd would be a must as well
I like the awd, and 3 .0.

For Memorial day, a local dealer had pretty big savings on 23 STs. They only had one at the time, but it was $10K+ off.
Of course, it is 2 model years older, and you have to keep your eye on the deletes, but it may still come with your 1 track day as well, which would be pretty sweet.

There is absolutely no question the Platinum is going to have a softer ride. One of the selling points of the ST is the stiffer suspension. I have to admit, at my age, I did prefer the ride of my old Limited. I drive a Super Duty for work, been in a lot of F-250s & F-350s in my career. A few E-250s, too.

That Limited was a relaxing, smooth ride. For me the selling point between the '21 Platinum I was looking at and the '23 ST I bought was the ST SUV Experience. Both were black, AWD, 3.0L V6. The 30K mileage wasn't as big a deal to me, mine is not a daily driver. I drive a company truck.

But, it's what's right for MY2020ST that counts. Just hope he enjoys the next car as much as the ST. And I hope it lasts a lot longer for him.

Thanks guys. The ST was my daily driver. Agreed, the ST was a slightly rough ride (by design) and based on the South Texas roads I travel it was a little much at times - but solid as a rock on open & flat interstate. For the 30K miles I drive every year I’m leaning toward the Platinum. I typically buy used, put a ton of miles on them and trade after a couple years. Look forward to providing an update after the shopping trip this weekend!
