If everybody goes with an AFE cai then my next question could be are the OEM charge pipes large enough or do they also need to be upsized ? I assume that's what Fenfab is doing?

correct, but the cold side charge pipes do not come with the fenfab intake kit. they are extra. i do know some guys who have changed out the charge pipe for an aftermarket unit or custom fabbed unit without doing an intake. it remains to be seen i think if the aftermarket charge pipes will fit with the AFE unit. i personally did the charge pipe because it seemed so strange to have all this extra intake volume and a huge intercooler all run to a tiny crimped bend before going to the silicone throttle body intake tube. may not do much, but it helped peace of mind.

Hey zdubyadubya hope you are well. Came across this post today while researching charge pipes. Have a WIC and will be tuning soon. Wondered what your impression of your cold side charge pipe is now that you have some time on it? I have the same concern you did about choking down the air flow post IC. Thanks.

Several people have installed the aFe intake with the FenFab charge pipe. It fits. My AFe is sitting at my office…I keep saying I’m gonna install it but then I don’t. lol

We're talking about the cold side (intercooler out) to the stock throttle body silicone adapter right? I haven't taken mine off, but any estimate of the "tiny crimped bend" cross-sectional area?

Yea…that one. I actually cut mine in half and measured the cross section where it’s flattened then measured the FenFab pipe and oem pipe inlets.
This is in square inches.
OEM inlet area 3.98
FenFab inlet area 4.43
OEM pipe flattened area 3.41

Both neck down at the TB connection…I don’t think I measured that spot. 0CC8B561-02CA-4810-A2CD-0BF092F899D4.jpeg

Calculating 3.41 sq in to sq mm equals about a 52mm internal diameter in circular diameter which would be around 430 cfm. If anyone read my throttle body thread:

https://www.explorerst.org/threads/throttle-bodies-cfm-and-mass-airflow.3163/post-39192

Enough for our engines, but marginal, especially since the flattened part is transverse to the curve. I'd have to say the FenFab charge pipe might actually be a nice little upgrade! One caveat- if the necked down portion leading to the throttle body is less than a 52mm ID, it's probably not worth it.

As alluded to by both @TMac and @UNBROKEN , I did some measuring and did some refinements to my tune post charge pipe install--since I made my own, I definitely think the upgrade was worth it. I tried to use even smaller radii than FenFab and used bigger diameter tubing as well. knowing what little i do about fluid dynamics there was no way the stock pipe was conducive to airflow.

Looks awesome with the red. So you welded up your own you say. I'm afraid my welding skills are good enough to get the job done but not to be proud of. Did you buy a kit or just pieces?

I remember your post about building your own charge pipe. Any chance you remember the ID of intercooler output? What size piping did you use? Actually, now that I see both the stock and the FenFab piece, I think yours is nicer. Seems to have the same diameter, throughout, which is ideal.

Yup. Side by side with the FenFab unit is obvious who is the professional welder and who isn't but I'm still pretty proud of it. No kit, just pieces of 2.75" 16Ga aluminum tubing.

I didn't look, but my calipers read an OD of ~ 2.75" (and the same piece of silicone fits just as snugly on my tubing as the intercooler) --assuming 16Ga or 14Ga wall thickness should give you the numbers you are after. My piping was 16Ga, 2.75". Thanks for the compliment! I didn't want to use the existing plastic flex pipe--I knew I wanted something that went all the way up to the throttle body so I knew I had to do it myself.

Very nice, thank you.
Thanks! No problem.

Has anyone done a before/after dyno or draggy in regards to the FenFab charge pipe mod? Curious if it would add power or just longevity over the plastic one.

I doubt there is any significant difference. I believe it was first design for Kevin who is obviously trying to squeeze ever pony out of the block possible. I plan to buy it but out of all the upgrades you can do I would think it has one of the smallest impacts on performance. I think it’s mostly for dressing up the engine bay with just a touch of performance.

I ordered one up from FenFab last week. When it comes, I’ll do datalog right before I put it and the AFE intake and then another after.

I’m really not anticipating much, but it would be nice to see if there is any improvement in airflow (#’s/min) more than anything else. Probably do a dragy comparison at the same time.

Anyone here that has a 2022 with the fenfab charge pipe/ bov mind posting a pic of where you tapped in the vacuum line?

Things OK at Fen Fab? Haven't received a response about a purchase request, once a week for a month....or are they just that busy?

I sent an email to Brett on the 29th asking when he expected to ship and he replied later that day with "About a week. I’m finishing up a bunch of them then off to powder coating." I'm anticipating receiving mine next week if all goes to plan.
