Just got my wife a used 2020 ST this week. The trim
on the lift gate is scratched. Could I sand and rattle can it or should I let the professionals handle it? Replacement part saying it will not be here until March or April.

Just order the replacement and wait it out for a month? It's strictly cosmetic and shouldnt have to be rushed

Guarantee this happened when the previous owner walked by the Ex and the liftgate suddenly auto-raised into the garage door.

No doubt. I saw it at the dealership and thought they raised the lift gate into the garage door. Then I read on here where someone said their dog lifted it by running under it. BINGO!

The rear hatch should only open like that when you have the keys on you.
