just came back from a 1700 mile road trip, cruise set at 80 most of the way, tucked in behind an 18 wheeler as a wind breaker for an hour or so, saw an average MPG just over 24.
with mixed driving at home i see around 20.5 avg

i forgot to mention, i did dial the knob to eco mode while on the highway.

I don't understand why mine always settles in at 17.4-17.5 no matter how I drive. I've reset it a bunch of times and it always ends up right back there. Most of my driving is on the freeway too!

easiest answers are dirty air filter, dirty MAP sensor or skewed O2 sensor(s)
THis is what I mean by skewed: if an O2 sensor is reading data and reporting it as shifted from the actual data, (say reading leaner than it is), this will effect how the ECU maps the required fuel charge.
Having a tune in it, a dragging caliper, soft tire pressure, high ethanol percentage, all of these can make any vehicle urn more fuel than expected.

This ^ Air filter is the most common item I’ve seen a lot of people neglect, therefore impeding gas mileage.

Yes, I get all that, but it should change with different driving conditions. I've tried driving it easy and in Eco mode and it still is the same as when I drive it hard in Sport mode. It never flucctuates from 17.4-17.5 MPG.

My filters are not even four months old and less than 5k miles. I don't think they need cleaning yet.

Have you ever reset the MPG display?
That is my first step when I want a new value from new conditions
