Has anyone done at home touch up repair on the rim with some sanding, grinding and finding the correct code gloss black?

I am also wondering the same. I have a couple small scratches on mine from the factory and not big enough to complain and lose her for days in service time.

Looks like a lot of us have Rim Scratches Syndrome. Strange phenomenon even with the warning beeps and cameras. I b=do nt think that that I have an unaffected rim left!

True, even though I seem to be the culprit lately. Did this 2 weekends ago pulling into a parking spot in Austin. It is really small but my stomach dropped when it happened. My wife immediately said, "Glad you were the first one and not me".

Little sanding down and touch paint and she will be like new

Exactly. The wife is always going to curb the wheels on the right side. She did the front first and a few months later curbed the rear, saying, so they match now.

I love my daughters, but as far as curbing, a few years ago when I was visiting my oldest, I had my supercharged Jaguar XF parked in the driveway. She said she needed to go to the store and asked for the keys. As she backed out of the driveway (fairly steep), I got to hear the front spoiler hit the ground when she hit the street. This spooked her a bit (she had a raised SUV at the time), so she immediately drove up over the curb completely whacking out a very expensive BBS front rim.

I never said a word about it, but she's never driven one of my vehicles since.

I've found that throwing on the 360 degree camera solves the bank and drive through issues.

Plus, the turning radius on the Explorer is phenomenal compared to a lot of SUVs. It's hilarious just how much tighter the turning radius is than my old Saturn Outlook.

Funny that you say this. I was just saying the same to the Mrs. the other night. There’s a particular spot on a wide main street that I typically take a U-turn on. With the BMW all wheel drive 328 I had to take it slow because I almost touched the curb on the other side while making a U-turn. With the ST, I estimate that I was about 6 feet away from the curb. I thought they widened the street.

Well here it is, curb rash 2.0. I did this one about a month after my wife bounced off a curb. She did enough damage for me to order another wheel. Luckily I didn't install it yet and this is the same wheel she hit a curb with. I may just keep the new wheel in the box to see if we will continue abusing this wheel....lol

My youngest daughter (26) has thrashed the wheels in her 2020 Accord Sport. She does live in the city but damn. So bad she is looking at another set in the next 6 months. No respect

With a 35 sidewall, you will continue to have problems with Curb rash

Here is what happened. I call this "Book Drop Debacle".
Note max speed recorded was only 16mph. (Maybe up to 20mph, since the camera seems to update once per second,)

I was in Hold mode, but because the chute is 1-foot shorter than it should be, and because I've curbed a rim before in this "bus stop" style book drop lane, I was very leery of staying away from the curb, too. So I leaned out the window to reach the chute, and the car suddenly took off like it was possessed. Apparently I pushed against the floorboard right where the accelerator pedal was.

About a $7000 lesson to put the trans in Park instead of using the Hold feature.

Strange how much damage resulted from this curb strike... because when you watch police pursuit videos, you see them hopping curbs at similar speeds and still being able to pursue the subject.

I would imagine the control arms between ST and PIU models are similar. The difference has to be in how much a 255/60/18 tire can absorb a curb strike compared to a factory 21" wheel/tire setup in the ST models.

I would have to imagine that law enforcement are tearing up a lot of front end parts on their Explorers.

I'm not sure that is the case. They have significantly taller tire sidewalls from using 255/60/18 tires versus the typical 20" or 21" wheel/tire combos in the ST models.

The pursuit rated tires and the steel rims make it possible to hop curbs with relative aplomb. I have hoped curbs doing 20-40 mph but always at an angle never straight on. I barely touched a curb with my 2021 20" rims on my ST and got a nasty curb rash.

Away on business and I get the call from the wife. Don’t kill me, I hit a curb with your new wheels. Wasn’t too bad. I bought a spare for this reason and can be repaired.

My wife Take 2 - Drivers side wheel now. Switch back to stock 20’s because it is cheaper than Divorce! Lol
She did say I can get new wheels. I am going 305/40/22 next time for the sidewall
