Real world mpg

Thx for the input everyone. MPG will not be the deciding factor if I decide to purchase an ST or not but it is nice to know that the possibility of more mpg vs my Ram is there.

I hear ya! My Hemi Ram's best mileage was 16.7. That was low-speed and steady rain on a day-trip. The Explorer Limited that replaced it got a bit over 18 towing my utility trailer.

Just clocked around 100 miles coming back from Schroon Lake NY. 93 Octane fill up prior to hitting the road. 2 adults 2 children AC cranked the whole time 85° weather and fully packed car minus grocery's. We crossed the 25mpg mark but I lost it quickly as we hit t stop lights and traffic near our home. All in all very happy with the power to mpg ratio

That number is always over by 1.5-2.5 MPG than the actual MPG. You really maxed out at about 23 MPG.

Makes sense I'm sure the numbers are always inflated slightly

You can dial it back and get a better guess by adjusting the "AFE" setting in Admin mode.

Thanks for the tip. Would this be something done with Forscan? I'm not sure it matters enough to me to adjust anything but it's good to know the option is there.

No, it's just in the Admin part of the computer. Hold the "OK" button while starting the motor. It'll go into "ET" mode. Tab down a bunch, 'til you get to "AFE" and select that. The default is 1,000. Dial it down to 950 or so. Mine is set to 965, as I recall.

I have some better error info on mine now after a long trip. I think I need to back it off another ten points to get the guess to be as good as it'll ever be. I got my Escape to within about 0.1 after a longer (3,800 mile) road trip.

Friday, I did a 400 mile roundtrip.

Mostly highway (66 to 76 mph), some stop and go, maybe 15% country roads, 2 or 3 times heavy on the gas for passing or merging, mostly Eco, mostly cruise on, AC on the entire time, auto start-stop on, 4 or 5 stops along the way, 87 fuel.

Filled the tank to the tippy top before departure and again on arriving home. I guess I had maybe 3 or 4ish gallons left in the tank when I got home.

So I've had the ST for about 1 1/2 months now and if I throw out the one weekend trip we made I'm averaging 16.6 mpg (hand calculated) with my normal everyday driving. I was hoping for at least 17 especially since I am babying the shit out of this thing. It's 2.5 mpg better than my Ram was getting and I was driving the Ram conservatively but not as conservative as I have been with the ST. I am fairly confident that if I drive the St like I drove the Ram the St is going to get ~15 mpg and to be honest that sucks. If I ever decided to let this thing eat every once and a while ( that's why I bought it) I'm probably looking at 12-13 mpg. I don't like to let mpg get to me but I was really hoping for better. For all you people who claim to get 18 in mixed driving are you hand calculating the mpg or are you going by the lie o meter (displayed mpg)? My dash readout is just shy of 3 mpg more than I am actually getting. I wonder how much the mpg is being affected by the 21" wheels. I'm betting it's got to be close to 2 mpg.

I don't know if you just got a bad ST or what but browsing fuelly your ST seems to be in line with the other outliers at the extreme low end of the spectrum...

Here is mine: My commute consists of 18.6 miles of 2-lane roads with 40 miles of interstate with the cruise control set at 76 on the interstate.

Id say if your using eco mode and driving regular there my be an underlying issue concerning gas mileage. I use eco mode 90% of the time and the other 10% I go hard in sport . I always see at least 20mpg . And as far as losing the MPGs when you open her up a bit one of those things gotta "pay to play". Being that the dash readout is overly optimistic on these things your mpg is on par with mine.

The readout is as much as 15% optimistic. I've determined what my odometer error is and I compensate when entering the data in Fuelly. I've dialed back the readout to be more accurate. If you really care, fill it, drive it, fill it and do the math. A radical change in mileage can indicate something is amiss.

I have gone by the read out which yourself and others have pointed out is flawed even calculating it though I'm within 2-4mpg of my dash read out.

Hey, are you suggesting the vehicle odometer is of by 15%. That would be far more of a scandal than any of other complaints about the vehicle.
