Rear Brake Failure

So, I just started our summer road trip. On our second day into the trip, I started hearing a grinding noise in the rear(not in a good way) I find what looks like a rock got stuck between the pad and rotor. Upon closer inspection, I find metal on metal contact between the pad and rotor (only on the outer side of the pad). One side of the caliper is seized.
Any idea why? I don’t see any reason other than defective caliper/ piston.

Calipers seize…file it under shit happens. Unfortunately it happened at a bad time for you.

Would this be a warranty thing? Or should I order parts and install along the trip

Might be warranty but if you’re on a trip now it seems like you’d wanna fix it and roll on vs sitting at a dealership for a week.

What parts can I salvage from current caliper?
Does any know what parts/ part numbers I need to upgrade to performance brakes?

Should be under warranty. You are going to need a caliper, rotor, and brake pads. Cost will add up quickly if you go to another shop. Really depends on how much time you have. Changing over to performance brakes is not really practical at this point if you are on a trip.

My thought, at this point, drop the car off at a dealership, rent a car, and continue trip. Hopefully, they can get the car done by Friday. Sound reasonable?
Lately, the explorer has been giving me a lot of small issues: Sync not working, AWD module, leaking front diff, etc.
Extreme plan — sell the explorer and buy a new car.

What year and how many miles are on your Explorer? Loaner vehicles are covered under warranty if dealer has to keep vehicle more than a day. Trust me, I know from experience. The problem is if you are far away you will likely have to return the loaner when vehicle repairs are completed. A good dealer might be able to just charge you a rental fee for any extra days.

2020 46k. Since it’s Sunday, no one can offer a loaner. Ford gave me an extended warranty after my last issue - AWD module

Dealers will blame anything to get out of warranty work. Welcome to modding a car. Plus they know you’re traveling and fucked…so they want that customer pay money.

$850 — So, should I counter argue or just take it without lube? This same dealer had this Bronco Raptor for sale

That's truly funny, I'd like to see the logic tree on that one.
Simple…brake calipers and rotors were removed to facilitate the spring install and not reinstalled properly. And they’ll win in court with that argument.

From service advisor - There are two pins per caliper that caliper floats in and out with, it probably took a while for the pads to wear down to the point to suck in the torn boot and cause the bind

Could you just go to a local mechanic and have them complete a temporary repair to get you on your way? I avoid the dealer as much as possible and brake relining is a pretty simple repair.

I could, but we rented a Maserati and continued on with our trip. It’ll be done on our way back home.

2020 56,000 This just happened to me yesterday! RR caliper did not retract and ground down pad to metal on disc. Just dropped off at dealership!
