I really don’t like the hidden version on my 2021. It will shut itself off after a couple days and won’t wake up when you touch it or swipe it. My 2018 Raptor has the original design with real buttons and it works every time no matter how long it sits. Even when in deep sleep mode.

Really? I’ve had them on every Ford vehicle I’ve owned since 2004 and never once used any of them.

I really don’t like the hidden version on my 2021. It will shut itself off after a couple days and won’t wake up when you touch it or swipe it. My 2018 Raptor has the original design with real buttons and it works every time no matter how long it sits. Even when in deep sleep mode.

I also don't like the hidden design on my 2022. It shuts off after exactly five days, and the buttons are not very convenient to use. Both my older Explorers have the easy to use mechanical buttons and they never shut down. Ford only briefly used the hidden buttons on the F150 but returned to the old mechanical buttons after many complaints from the truck drivers.

Everyone has their own opinions on what they use and like, and what they don't. That is the way it should be but I have read surveys of Ford owners where most say one of the features they really like is the door keypad. It does set the Fords apart. GM since about 2015 has offered a dealer installed keypad that works exactly like the Ford, except it uses a battery and the entire keypad has to be replaced when it runs down.

My 2014 explorer had hidden heat buttons too in the trim panel. Swipe to turn on. Same with ny '22 ST. I like the code. Easy to grab something out the back of inside without bringing keys with ya. Just walking by, can get in, grab something, lock back out. I love it. And the features to only unlock driver, or back hatch, and such.

I like mine too. Interesting that the dealer add-on one that GM sells for their cars uses the same set of extra numbers for opening doors, hatch, locking, etc. as Ford does.

GM Add-on? I've never seen a GM vehicle with the number key opening options. Only ever seen that on Ford/Lincoln vehicles.

I wonder if Ford is trying to move everything towards the stick on key pad? It's far easier to make, no assembly required and people who use it may be willing to pay to have it replaced once the battery dies.

I had a 2019 Ranger that sat on the dealer lot for about 9 months before I bought it. It had the stick on key pad from the factory, a $99 option. It was completely dead. I hated the way it looked, so I removed it. Eventually the dealer sent me a $99 check, but it took a couple of visits to the service department and finally getting the salesman involved.

I really don't think Ford has any interest in changing to a stick-on keypad. The dealer will add the stick-on if it did not come from the factory with one wired in. They have a forty year history with the built in keypad and are proud of the flush mount they now use. I was not aware there were ever any shipped from the factory with a stick-on. You say it sat on the lot for nine months. Are you sure it was not dealer added?

EDIT: Looking at the Ford Dealer Guide for 2019 Rangers, I see the keypad was not available installed at the factory, but could be included with the order as a Ford Accessory, Code 63. This means it would appear on the window sticker but would be shipped separately. This method is used for things like splash guards when ordered with the vehicle. So your stick-on is a factory option but was installed by the dealer.

I can't say with 100% certainty it was not dealer installed, but it was on the window sticker and the dealer service department was clueless about it. They insisted it was hard wired.

At least it's color matched now. In 2019 they were all wrinkle black.

I was told that ford held the patent for the securicode system, so no other automaker could use the tech with a licensing fee paid to ford. Either GM paid the fee or ford doesn't or no longer holds the patent.

yup. My ex-wife, my girlfriend, myself and a few other ford owners I know really rely on this feature of ford vehicles. My GF ended up going to a hybrid and makes mention that the keypad is one thing that she really misses from her Escape. My ex-wife will go to events with our son and lock her stuff in the car (staying close by) to not have to carry a purse/keys or whatever. Ive left my car at the airport, locked my keys in the car and gave my buddy the code to get my car out. my kid left his backpack in my car and at work - he swings by, uses the code and gets his stuff out then locks it back up.

so yeah its pretty envaluable at least in my bubble

Yeah i love this feature. I don't use it a ton but when i need it, it's awesome to have. It's really nice not having to bring a key with me when i go run at a trail.

I have only seen my key fob a few times since buying my ST. It is great not having to look for keys anymore. I did have a small problem when it got really cold outside, as the keypad would not light up by touching it. Someone on this forum mentioned to use your palm to light up the keypad when it is cold and I haven't had an issue since.

I've had issues with the keypad when it's raining out side. The old style never had that problem.
