Sun Roof Fabric Issue

My wife had opened up the sun/moon (whatever the hell people call it, the roof window, how about that! LOL) while driving and have done this many times before, but seems like the faberic didnt roll in like it should have, so the wind pumbled it and now it wont retract at all. The vehicle just turned a year old, so it should still be under warentee to replace/fix. Question though, has any one had this issue? I have an appointment for the $tealer$hip today, but not looking forward to it. Last time they had it, the rear hatch leaked water and destroyed the radio unit that is in the rear right panel under the rear right window. They pulled the weather stripping out until it stopped leaking and threw a bunch of glue in it and got it all over the outside of the truck where they touched, on the mirrors, windows, doors, inside on trim... and they pulled it off so much, the interior panels were not even installed under the stripping anymore, it was so poorly done.... and I would rather fix this if possible and not have to go back to them to fix....

I've tried to manually pull out and in to see if its a retractor like a seat belt or something.... but it seemed like it was spring loaded to roll up and then the motor just pulled it along the track to roll out.

The side clips popped out, practically impossible to fix it without removing the sunrooof.

Happened once to me as well, unfortunately, dealership needs to take care of this.

Make sure you also check the sunroof once you get the vehicle back. They didnt seal mine properly after fixing the sagging and had a slight water leak, back it went

Any updates? This just happened to mine as well. Looking for what to expect repair-wise. Whats weird was it happened from one day to the next without any incident. One day all is well, the next i get in the car and see it hanging like yours. Is there a diagram sowing how this is actually put together? Im curious to see what the actual point of failure is....

This happened to mine recently. Took it to the dealer and was told it would be almost $2000 with labor included. How is this not covered by warranty? Also, how do I fix this?

It looks like there are not clips at all? Is it just that the roller has tabs at the end and inserts onto the track mechanism?
If that's the case then I imagine the roller has to be replaced, but that means you have to pull out the glass and get to the track?
Please tell me they didn't make something so crappy that you have to replace the whole roof?

I don't understand such a design flaw. It isn't the first panoramic roof Ford has put in an explorer.
It would have to be bean-counters saying "look how cheap we could make this"....

I olnly close my shade in the warmer summer months. Hope mine never does that and if it does hope the PremiumCare warranty covers it.

Hell no lol. Im pretty handy and more than will to try but I havent seen enough info on how the fix can be performed by an owner. Paying near 2k to a dealer is absurd. Lately Ive just been giving thought to how I can either fabricate something myself or perhaps use the manual sliding shade from a non ST exlporer. The main hang up for me is having to take down the whole damn headliner to see how it all pieces together. I only want to do that once lol

This reminds me over 5 years ago, my 2013 MKZ which had the panoramic sunroof started making a noise when opening and closing. So I took it into the dealer and they had it for about 42 days before they could fix it. They had to send it to a company that specializes in convertibles and sunroofs. It was under CPO extended warranty and was told that if I had to pay for the repair, it would have cost me $3000, which was about the price of the roof on my factory window sticker! The whole process sucked. I was told the reason it took so long was the repair shop had to take photos and send it to Ford to get the warranty claim approved.

hi . yesterday i had same iisiue in my 1 year explorer sunroof, i just roll back the curtain and all fabric went down, i check for clips and i cannot found nothing, seems that the roller doesnt have enought force to roll curtain.
im gonna go to the dealer and pray go get a warranty repair. i will inform how this ends

Welcome to the club unfortunately. I've been putting this off myself since I'm well out of warranty. If you don't mind, once they get a look it, can you get them to confirm if the cause is the clips or the roller itself? I cant seem to find a clear answer so when I do take this on, I want to be sure I have everything I need. Good luck. Let us know how it goes!

you do know the sun roof thing is not supposed to open until the fabric is rolled up
maybe you have a switch failure that allowed it so fluck up
thats a vehicle issue not a person issue
both my 150 and old edge and the st...i select open the roof thing and the fabric rolls up first to the 1st stop spot, then if you select the full open the st and f150 it rolls up
maybe there was a change made ???

Anyone have any updates or luck getting this covered under warranty? This just happened to my 2020 Explorer. Seems like a safety issue, one it is partially blocking the view of the rear view mirror out of the back window, and second if the wind caught it the right way, it could blow off completely and who knows where the piece of fabric could end up?

New car warranty will fix it, happened to me about a bit over a year after purchasing new.

Doubt its a switch issue in most cases since I, like many others, hoped in the car one day and just saw the shade sagging. Definitely indicates something failed that normally keeps the shade under tension. I just hold out hope that enough people complain that it becomes an issue. i refuse to pay almost 2k out of warranty to fix it lol

Got mine fixed last year. I was leaving Target and opened the shade. I was looking for traffic in the rearview and noticed I couldn't see anything. Sure enough I look back and the shade was hanging down. The shade didn't make any weird noise while opening so I don't know what happened. On my third visit to the dealer (A/C not blowing cold, ended up having the whole system replaced) I mentioned it to the service manager and he told me it was covered. I never did ask what was the reason for it failing but they did fix it.

This happened to me over the summer. I was sitting at a stop light on the phone during one of the heat waves. I heard a pop noise that sounded like something hit the roof. When I got home the sunshade was slightly sagging on the passenger side. I wasn't even using or opening the sunroof or sunshade. Definitely a poor design. If I can figure out how to get the sunshade to roll all the way back I may have the sunroof tinted and leave it rolled back.
