TPMS fault

Hi folks, first post and new to the Ford Family.

I picked up my 2021 Explorer ST in Atlas blue with the street pack a month ago. I quite enjoy it. I also ordered a set of after market winter wheels, tires, and sensors. I installed the wheels last weekend but didn’t do the TPMS training process…the new pressures appeared on the display so I thought I was good. After driving for approximately 20km a TPMS fault appeared and no pressures where then displayed. I read the manual about the training process and went through it step by step. It would enter training mode and the display would show ‘train front left wheel’. I never get the single beep to move to next position. It eventually times out. I stopped by a friend’s shop to use his training tool. No luck. He could see each of the sensors operating on 315MHz and get pressure readings on the tool display however we couldn’t get the vehicle to recognize the sensors. He also plugged in his Snap-On tool to clear the TPMS fault in the computer and attempt to train again still no luck. i have searched here and the interweb but haven’t found any matches. Are Ford specific sensors required? One last thing—I did make sure no chargers or devices where in the vehicle during the training process. Thanks for your help and guidance in solving this issue. jeff

Don't know if this will help, I copied this off of Rock Auto's '21 Explorer page. They sell 2 different Motorcraft and one Schrader TPMS. All they sell are programmed.

Thank you for sharing. I will go review that in detail. I assume the sensors were pre-programmed but I will need to check with the tire shop….unfortunately that shop is 5hrs away so can’t just pop by.

its definitely a programming issue. I had the same problem with my new wheels/tires. Just because the sensors are 315MHz, doesn't fix everything. You need to have sensors that a programmed for the '21 explorer. Which means you will need to unmount your tires, install, and re-mount. I got the ones below for my '20 and the training process worked when it hadn't before for a set of supposedly Ford compatible 315MHz sensors. *Note* that from what I can tell so far, this vehicle doesn't have the ability to pick up more than one set of TPMS at a time (unlike my wife's vehicle--it automatically picks up the summers and the snow tires) and you will need to train your truck again for the summies. Which to me seems dumb, but whatever. I think this is where "cloning" comes in. If you can clone your sensors then you don't need to worry about training every change of season.

i bought my wheels/tires from Tirerack. I bought the clicker training tool but Unbroken mentioned you don't need it. Sure enough, after a few minutes of driving, each wheel will get properly sync'd with no effort required. If you get an error, the tpms sensors are probably not the right ones.

thanks guys, i expect a problem with either the sensor or their programming. it will be a trip to the tire shop when I can secure an appointment.

Just went through this with my 2021 ranger. The shop never programed the after market TPMS sensors correctly. Went to the shop and they had to drain the air in the tires to 0 PSI for them to be able to program the sensors, after that was done and air put back in they worked fine.

update, I stopped at the tire shop yesterday and front right wasn’t programmed properly. They were able to program sensor on the rim and train them to vehicle. All was good until about 2 miles from home and tpms error pops up For the front right sensor….so I am guessing that one needs replacing.
