All,
I am looking to tow pretty heavy every now and then to go to the track. Purchasing a truck is definitely tempting at this point. However, I am trying to figure out the trailer brake controller, or lack there of. These have the 7 pin blade connector and my understanding is that this style connector needs a controller to apply the voltage for the brakes on the trailer to engage. Is this correct? If so, does the ExST apply some power through this connection without a controller? Any pointers would be great.

You need to install a brake contriller such as this one. https://www.towuniverse.com/2002-20...MXjZLN-7hddsVyp9kA19FtFVfzF_ri-hoCNucQAvD_BwE

With out it you have no trailer braking. It's easy to install as there is a plug by the steering column on the Explorer this plugs into. If you are not familiar with this you may want to have a shop install it for you.

I like and use Curt brake controllers myself. Just an FYI, you will need an adapter harness specific to the Explorer and the controller you use. The controller package Dale5403 is showing has the specific harness for the Explorer and the specific Tekonsha brake controller.

Below is a pic of my Curt brake controller in my 25'. **I tow around 4,500 Lbs. (+) when I haul my toys to go riding.
