We just recently had this exact same thing happen to us - very scary. We are in the process of once again working with our local dealership to get these issues resolved. We're continually told that there is no code, so we cannot do anything. We have also opened a case with corporate so hopefully, we will get some resolution. Our Explorer ST is 2021 with ~28k miles on it now. These issues have been ongoing for quite some time and have had the vehicle in the shop now going on 4 times.
Hello, did you ever get it figured out. I am having stalling/bogging down when accelerating and it cuts out and will not accelerate. Sounds scary too. 2020 ST

I have recently brought my ST in for what I perceive to be a fairly significant transmission/shifting issue.

The issue happens often when I’m attempting to pass someone. Keep in mind, we all have a high performance and very fast vehicle. :)

If you accelerate as if you’re about to pass, let off the gas suddenly (in my case where I can’t quite pass yet), and then hit the gas hard...the vehicles loses all its powers/hesitates/and almost feels like The engine is stalling.

I can reproduce this every time now but the dealership is telling me nothing is wrong. This almost got me killed the first few times when I had no idea what was going on and I’ve never experienced this in the car before. Now I have to be somewhat gentle when I accelerate or pass a car in my $60k sport tuned vehicle??? WTF?

Has anyone experienced this? Can anyone also simulate or reproduce this?

I’m sorry Ford but this is a big issue and it needs to be addressed.

I’m sure this has been answered by now being over 4 years old. But it’s how the vehicle is made unfortunately. I’ve experienced it multiple times, it’s dangerously deadly. Doesn’t happen in sport mode for me, only normal and eco, and eco is SIGNIFICANTLY worse. I’m talking over a full second lag, you will get rear ended if pulling out in front of someone and attempting to accelerate fast enough so that they don’t have to brake or let off the gas for you. A tune mostly fixes this problem. It’s obviously a fault with the factory tune settings. I got FP tune solely for this reason alone, as I typically drive normal mode 99% of the time and could not live with the lag. It’s absolutely not turbo lag. The engine is receiving zero power because the ECU/TCM must be tuned in a way that it is prioritizing gas efficiency above all else.

I’m having a separate issue nobody can seem to answer. My car hesitates hardcore immediately after shifting into Drive right after starting up the car. Sometimes you can kind of feel like the drivetrain is starting to receive a little bit of power before it starts to roll forward at a standard pace. Occasionally it doesn’t move at all for a few seconds after shifting into Drive and one time I tried to give it a little bit of gas when it wasn’t moving and I heard 2 huge “clunks” from the back end as it slowly moved forward. I immediately stopped and started over and it was working fine again.. But very frequently after start up and shifting into Drive (I always back-in btw, so I’m rarely ever shifting into reverse first, pulling out is so much more preferable to me over backing out) my ST hesitates to move and then VERY slowly starts move until it picks up full juice, and this is without me touching the gas pedal at all.

Does anyone else have this problem and know how to address it? I’m pretty sure there’s a fault somewhere along the driveline, I’ve had all my fluids replaced in the driveline and this issue still occurs.
