Back with another update....

So starter was approved and ordered. They get it in, open the box and they ordered the wrong one. Ordered a new one, that took a few days but came in yesterday. This morning they put it in. After it was done, they were driving it out of the shop to the parking lot and the coolant crossover tube under the intake manifold broke dumping coolant everywhere. Ordered a new one and gave me an eta of 10 days....they will have a better idea tomorrow if that is correct.

I have looked this up and see what it is but I don't see any mention here of this being a commonly failed item. I am at 60k miles on a 2020, not driven hard and it was purchased as a certified preowned.

I haven't approached the rental yet...but I still have it....nor did I ask on this being covered under my warranty (but I see no reason for it not to be covered.)

Aside from this episode, this thing has been mostly trouble free....but this sucks.
These guys sound like a bad joke! If anyone should ascertain the proper starter for this vehicle, it should be the stealership!
I would also make a case that the coolant tube broke when the Explorer was in "their" possession. That 10 day ETA better be because of a backorder. No way the repair should take anywhere near that long!

I've been following along another thread and this one while i've been chasing my own issue. Ford Pass App (I know) has been giving me notifications of vehicle going into battery saving mode constantly. Doesn't matter how long I drive or how often/days of the week. Finally picked up a battery tender and left that on overnight (roughly 10-12 hours). Battery fully charged after this very low voltage tender was left on it. Almost two weeks now I have not gotten a single notification from the vehicle and the weather has been <30 for the last week or more.

Not sure what that means but happy to throw on the tender every month for a day if that means the battery is ok. Never had issue starting the car. Just frustrating to loose access to the app for starting it when i'm out or getting ready in the morning.

How old is your battery? I have found with these that they tend to do weird things based on the battery voltage. Mine was even more of an oddity in that I never saw the battery saver message and never had any dtc or wrench lights pop up. There was a stored code for the starter that I listed previously but that never tripped the actual dtc light. Dealership is still confused on why it never tripped the actual light. I still don't have mine back yet. They have had it for almost 3 weeks at this point. I was told today I should get it back.

Wife has a ‘22 Edge that kept going into sleep mode. We thought it was the battery. The alternator was faulty.
They replaced alternator and v-belt under warranty. Working fine so far. So guessing they have a batch of bad alternators.
Sleep mode issues cross different years and models.

Battery is the original. Had it and alternator tested multiple times to make sure I wasn't chasing something similar to whats been posted already.

So, I still do not have my vehicle back lol.

Thursday was 3 weeks that it has been there. The latest is they proceeded to perform the camera recall while it was there....that I have specifically avoided taking it in for since we would only see a blue screen every once in a while. Replaced the camera, they go to update the IPMB for it and it fails so they mess with that for 2 days and apparently its dead now. They had to order a new one, in sometime next week.

Thankful I have a rental though and trying to stay calm. The screen on this 24 Escape ST-line is nice though.

Just got mine into the shop today as well. Battery issue (I HOPE)..
Not sure if it's alternator until they do their diagnostic test.

Funny thing is, mine's a '20 with about 54km and I've had the battery already replaced once within the first year (under warranty) This will be second time, 3rd battery.

I normally don't have battery issues but it's not the first time I had to boost it. This time though, after I boosted it and let it run 7min, shut it off and it was dead dead!

Boosted it again and took it for a drive to charge the battery up and everything went into limp mode. My screen turned off, the dash board became very dim (hard to see) and the chiming to my seat beat warning sounded half dead. Came straight home thinking I would just die on the side street.

Called Ford on Dec 20th and was told the earliest they could get me in for a battery replacement was Dec 27th. I pushed the lady and she was able to get me in today for 10:30am.

Yesterday I took it over to the dealership about 10km away and boy oh boy, was that almost a mistake.. It boosted fine for me. Let it run for about 5min before leaving.

When I left, again everything turned off as I drove. When I'd stop at a red light, it's like everything would start to load up again until I started to drive away and would get the black screen, dim screen, etc. My turn signals would work, but not my horn. Power to the vehicle was there if I needed to speed up. All my sensors kept telling me they weren't working as the vehicle would drive. Engine light stayed on. Got to the dealership and reversed parked it. Backup camera worked surprisingly.

One thing I should mention, if your every in a low power/battery situation, make sure to turn off auto-start as the first stop sign or red light will cause your vehicle to die if you're needing to boost it. Lucky for me, I have the auto-starter by-pass installed so it idles while stopped, but that's something to def think about...

Got a reply this morning needed approval of a new battery install. They said they charged it overnight and it was dead dead. Waiting to hear back to see if after diagnostics they determine it's also an alternator issue. I'd rather have both fixed now, then have to come back in a week or two.

My truck has extended coverage warranty, but not shocking the battery isn't covered. 3yrs or 60km they said. My first battery was covered under warranty but to have a battery replaced and only last 3-4 yrs is insane. They explained the batteries are made so eco-friendly cheap, there not designed to last longer than 3-5yrs which I find ridiculous to say the least.

My biggest gripe about all of this is, I could've went to a bought a battery, but Ford makes it so inaccessible to access the battery let alone pull it out. Not sure if there are videos out there or not, but I can see why they do it. MONEY!

Lastly, I would've went anywhere else to purchase a battery & have it replace/ installed but if it does turn out to be an alternator issue, my warranty will cover that and plus it's all being done by Ford.

But man, they sure don't make vehicles the same anymore in this economy.

I'd like to see your update when you get your baby back and I'll be sure to post mine as well.. Thanks for all the info...

The battery is not really that difficult to replace. It just looks like it is. It can be done in 30 minutes. There are a few videos out there that show you how to do it.

Sooo....update...ugh...

Drove to pickup the Explorer in our rental 2024 Bronco and returned home in the Bronco. First, I do not fault my dealer on most of this. They have been great. A lot of the time it has been there has been waiting on parts. I can tell my advisor is over our case as well. They are giving us a rental even when they don't really have to as even the extended warranty, it only lists 10 day covered.

All told, it was over $3K in parts plus labor and we paid only the $100 deductible.

-new battery (I warrantied this from where I bought it)
-new starter (to fix the original concern of a no start)
-new coolant crossover tube (occurred during the test drive after replacing the starter)
-replaced 3 cameras per the recall(s)
-new IMBM module as the original failed during reprogramming

The porter calls my advisor while I am standing there and I hear him say "leaking from where?" They took it through the carwash and it was leaking water through the rear hatch...like a lot of water. We had seen some drops here but never to this extent. We were rear ended a few months ago and the drops started after that. As we are looking things over I find broken clips, panels not reconnected properly etc. Things that I know where not there before and in areas I know they were for the cameras/harness. Advisor ordered some new clips for me, reconnected the panels and suggested I contact the body shop first that did the work on the leak. If they won't work on it, bring it back to Ford...ok fair.

So we leave, getting 1 mile or so away and I realize I have no audio. Radio, streaming, navigation, nothing works. Reverse camera works fine lol. No sound from anything. We reset it while we are driving and still no audio. Turn around and he gives us the Bronco right back lol. Soon to close on Christmas eve and closed on Christmas day tomorrow, they won't look at it until Thursday. Hopefully this is just reprogramming.

Is why I don't deal with Stealerships! I bought an extended warranty that accepts any authorized service center so I can bring the vehicle to any trusted mechanic that stands behind their work.
In your case, I would have been all the way up to ford corporate to rectify this chaotic clusterflock they call service!
I consider myself a patient person but there is a point where you are seriously getting raped. As I mentioned before, you have serious resolve my friend!

Firstly, I'm trying to decipher whether you have a 2020 with 54 kilometers or 54K miles. I'm thinking you've used "km" in both cases in your post but I'll let you clear that up for us. ;)

It does sound like an alternator problem and you were running on battery alone. Your engine was prioritizing the voltage, leaving little to none for systems. Fuel pump, ignition coils, injectors etc robbed the rest of the vehicle of available power.

If you're under warranty for your issue, this may not apply but if you're not, an Auto Zone or Advance Auto will do an alternator test free of charge. If your alternator is ok, you can have your working vehicle back in 30 minutes if you change the battery yourself, as BrooseDaMoose mentioned. Otherwise, you're at the mercy of the dreaded Stealership and how long they'll keep your ST.
And yes, it's all about Money! They are capable of still making vehicles like they used to but this my friend is what they call planned obsolescence!

Merry Christmas!

Thanks for the reply back. Yes it's 54k km..
So I got my vehicle back yesterday. It was ultimately the battery.
Alternator & starter tested; no issues there.
New battery w/ install was $400~cdn out the door.
Reset all sensors and warnings.. Got my Dark Horse back and she's purring like a lion...
Now, lets see how long a 3rd battery lasts...

Good luck with your baby, and hopefully she comes back to you the way you bought it..
