It locks the doors. Hit this button then the liftgate button and it will lock all the doors when it's closed.

On the Mercedes SUV I just traded for an ST, I had similar buttons with the left being close and the right being close/lock. It is a minor detail but it is a simpler answer to the same problem. Having gone from a MB back to a Ford (my sixth one) there is a noticeable difference in quality and user control simplicity. MB's are just more user friendly and more refined with the hatch buttons being one small example.
