Unfortunately the systems are different but doesn't mean you can't check some basics. Coolant level not too low and getting pulled out of system to trip the warning? Thermostat and everything working normally where it's not getting stuck? Does it happen when you first start driving, are you under load towing or dropping gears racing?

3.5 L engines are known to have thermostat issues as well as air pocket issues when not refilled under vacuum. If the system were low and refilled, this could be an issue. The fix for the thermostat seems to be replacing the thermostat with a Motorcraft (no aftermarket) thermostat with the newer plastic stem. This is discussed at length on the truck forums with 3.5 engines. I also believe that the 3.5's in the Exploders have water pumps that are behind the timing chain covers and when they leak, they leak internally. Might be a good time to check the consistency of your oil.
