Should I spend an extra $300?

Need new tires before winter on my 2020 ST street. 28k on factory tires now. I’d like to grab the Continental DWS06 plus. $300 per tire. Only come in 275/40r21. Factory for my ride is 275/45r21. Is there really any concern in the 40 sidewall ratio vs 45? And 107 vs 110 load rating?
My second choice would be Bridgestone Alenza’s which are an exact factory replacement size. It’s not worth it to me to spend an extra $300 for a set of four if I don’t have to.
I’m assuming it won’t matter, but I’ve made that mistake before.

I can tell you I ran those Bridgestones on my edge before. They were 265/40/21’s they weren’t bad tires but they were smoked at 22k miles. That’s with rotating them every 5/6k miles. Wouldn’t pass inspection. I also ran dws06’s on my sho loved those tires. I can’t say how well they held up. I got rid of the car 10k miles after putting them on. The difference between the 2 sizes you put is about an 1 inch in tire height. With the stock size being larger. Your speedometer will be off 2/3 mph at highway speeds.

I guess I never put any thought into the weatheractives. Prob because the stock pirellis wore out so quick. But again, if I can save $300+ for an equally good tire (the DWS06) I’ll go that route.

@MNSThockeydad The 107 load index can carry a maximum weight of 2149 lbs. The 110 load index can carry a maximum weight of 2337 lbs.
2149x4=8,596lbs-4583lbs (weight of my ST)=4,013lb towing capacity for the 107 load index vs 4765lb towing capacity for the 110 load index.
I think this is right? Lotta numbers for me!

The new Alena's have a crazy good warranty. Not sure how @21BlackST ran through them so quick. They have an 80k from Bridgestone which was part of why I went with them initially. They ride amazing but my set was insanely noisy for some reason. I have had many sets of Bridgestones and never had any noise complaints until this set for some reason. The manager couldn't explain it and we figured it was a weird issue with that size and ended up swapping to Michelins. No issues since, whisper quiet and still have decent warranty (55k).

There are a ton of threads on people upsizing to 22" wheels for more options. Maybe not the route you want to go since the wheels would triple your budget. Good luck with the purchase. I'm pretty sure that there is promotion right now for Bridgestone tires.

I have no clue why I had such a problem. They were just evenly worn below the wear bars. I always had good luck with Bridgestones previously. I can’t speak on the warranty. I got them from tire rack. Kind of what I thought about the Bridgestones. I have heard several people complain about their road noise. I guess I’d have to take a chance if I chose them.
Continental has a rebate going on thru August as well.
id love to go up to 22’s but I’d never be able to justify that with my wife.
staying in 21”wheels I’ve looked into 285’s and 295’s but I believe both would require a spacer?

I traded in the edge before I had a chance to use them in the snow. My dad has an edge st as well. He runs the lionharts year round. Said he’s never had a problem in the snow. But he’s also retired and stays in when it’s really bad. I currently have a set of them on my explorer. I honestly don’t think they would do to well in the deep snow or ice conditions. I did drive in some really bad conditions with the Bridgestones and it handled them just fine.

275/40r21 will look silly small on these cars. I’m saying really stupid looking. I’ve seen one, not the look you want.

They didn't invent a magic compound - More sticky = shorter life, Longer life = less sticky.
In this case, "sticky" equates to soft, so a tire that lasts 3x longer is going to be hard/rough.

Of course, the tread design plays a part, and may make it even noisier. (I imagine they beefed the belts a bit too, so they dont prematurely fail)

I wouldn’t expect to get 80k out of the Alenza’s. But 50,000 should be attainable. I have Goodyear wranglers on my old f150. I never noticed any noise from them. With a less aggressive tread pattern, I would hope the Alenza’s are quiet enough.

I have put Toyo Celsius tires on our previous Expedition and also my daughters Edge. Great tires for Minnesota weather! Check out the Toyo Celsius Sports. Or Pirelli Weather Actives, my service writer put Vredestein Quatrac's on his wife's ST and he swore by those.

Yeah they do layer the compounds as they wear to 'continue' the handling and ride characteristics. If they didn't last and you had rotation history it's an easy warranty replacement. Just surprised on how loud after how great previous versions of same tire were.
